For fiscal year 2010, Mississippi State University had research expenditures of $201 million; for FY 2008, the National Science Foundation ranked MSU 58th nationally amount the top 150 public universities in total R and D spending. As designated by the Carnegie Institute, Mississippi State University is a "very high research activity university," the highest level that can be bestowed on doctoral granting universities in the United States.
