Applicants to Mississippi State University must compose and submit a statement of purpose. Prospective students will upload a statement of purpose while completing the online application. Students should be aware the statement of purpose is a major factor in final admission decisions. It is to the applicant’s advantage that special attention and focus be given to composing this statement.
- Review the departmental expectations for a statement of purpose (see departmental requirements).
- Describe knowledge of the discipline, approach to past work, qualifications for graduate study and intended focus, as well as personal and professional goals.
- Prospective students should demonstrate familiarity with the program of interest and provide information on how the student’s abilities are a good match to the program.
- Proofread: Typographical errors and grammatical mistakes can undermine an applicant’s best efforts.
*Beginning January 1, 2017, a Statement of Purpose will be required for Graduate Unclassified applicants.
