Only students admitted into the university are eligible to register for classes. Students unsure of their admission status should contact Graduate Admissions.
All admitted students should consult with their graduate advisor prior to registering for classes to ensure courses they wish to take will help fulfill degree requirements.
If your major is Graduate Unclassified, you will need to contact each department in which you are taking classes for approval and major overrides before being released.

Online Students
Online Registration
Students can register online through MyState (the university portal) after creating a student account. Students will need the following information in order to complete the online registration process:
- NetID
- Password
- List of courses and course information:
- Course Subject
- Course Number
- Course Section
- Log into to your MyState from the MSU homepage.
- Select the stacked menu icon on the top left beside the MyState logo and choose “Banner”.
- Select "My Banner for Students", then "Registration", and choose "Register for Classes".
- Select the term (semester) in which you wish to register.
- Choose “Add/Drop Classes” and select “Class Search”.
- Select from the drop-down boxes as needed. Once you have selected the appropriate filters, you may view your course options by selecting “Search”.
- Click on the appropriate section (e.g. 501) of the course and select "ADD." This course will be added to your class schedule. You may add additional courses by repeating this process.
- Once your schedule is complete you may print a copy by selecting “File” and “Print”.
What are Registration Holds?
A registration hold prevents a student from registering for classes for the upcoming semester. Registration holds can be placed on a student for various reasons by Student Financial Services, the Student Health Center, or other authorized individuals. A Registration Hold can only be removed by the party placing the hold. Your academic advisor can assist you in determining the source of the hold and directing you to the appropriate party to have it removed.
To have your best selection of courses, you should check for holds in your Banner account well before your registration time begins.
- Log into to your MyState from the MSU homepage.
- Select the stacked menu icon on the top left beside the MyState logo and choose “Banner”.
- Select "My Banner for Students", then "Registration", and choose "View Your Holds".
